A TOAST

Colonel Keith Jacobson of San Diego, wearing the KENTUCKY COLONEL UNIFORM he inherited from his grandfather, raises his glass to all.  Read earlier posts for more details on the uniform.

    Colonel Jacobson
Is the belt and buckle also Kentucky Colonel specific? If so could you perhaps post a larger phot showing the detail?
Your grandfather’s uniform looks in very good condition.

    cheers

The saber belt is, unfortunately, not a Kentucky Colonel belt. It is a Navy Officer dress saber belt made in the early 1900′s. It’s five gold stripes and round gold buckle go well with the uniform, though I am searching for a real Kentucky Colonel buckle.

Colonel Jacobson, thank you for the information on the buckle.
Col Derwin Mak and Col. Arjeh Van der Sluis (Toronto, Ontario), found a buckle with the KENTUCKY STATE SEAL CIRCA: 1850 on the following website:
    http://www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg22.htm

Scroll down about 7 buckles. It may not be completly accurate to the period of the KY Colonel uniform, (given that the two other pictures seem to show a rectangular buckle), but it may serve in the meantime.

    regards

    Col. Ralph Schoenig (Toronto, Ontario)

Blockade Runner is not a good source for reliable, authentic gear. Here’s a better buckle from a more accepted source in the reenacting community : http://hanoverbrass.com/T-83frontKy.JPG

Here’s a link to the page where you can find this individual photo : http://hanoverbrass.com/Buckles11.htm Cost is $45 if you order yellow brass and $65 if red brass. Hanover has twelve pages of buckles waiting to be viewed. They produce some great brass items.

If you’re looking for a sword belt, please use one of the vendors listed on the Authentic Campaigner’s page at http://authentic-campaigner.com/links/browselinks.php?c=2 You’ll be satisfied with your purchase.

The weekend I received my commission, I was participaing at the Perryville, KY, reenactment. I was on the staff of the commanding Confederate general. Had my likeness taken in my Lt. Colonel’s uniform. If I every get that glass plate scanned, I’ll post a link.

If you’re looking for information about the Civil War, my links page is a good place to start : http://www.zipcon.net/~silas/links.htm Much info about the gear, food and methods of the common soldier during the war.
